A lot of people ask me how I muster the discipline to write. Typically I make the decision that I am going to write, and before I settle down, I pour myself a nice cold drink, and while I’m at it, I refill the ice trays so my next drink can also be cold, then I apply some eyeliner and do something with my hair, because that deranged look in my eye when I catch my reflection in my blank screen can be cruel. Around then, I’ll make sure the cat bowl is full so I don’t get interrupted by meowing and pawing when I’m in the middle of a thought, and if the bowl looks kind of dirty, I wash it. Then I like to go through the house, calling all of the cats to make sure none of them somehow dug a hole through the house and escaped. After that I’m pretty tired, so I go to bed.
